Sad Death by Misadventure

We found her yesterday by the smell, only a day or two after she died.

I don’t know who she is. Her ear, with its tag, is gone, taken by a pig. I won’t know until we next run the herd through the yards.

I do know that she was in good condition and that she was young. Her hooves are young hooves. I’ll be looking for one of the ‘E Tag’ cohort, born in 2009.

It appears that she’s slipped while walking on a steep cattle trail, softened by the 14mm of rain we had last week. There are slip marks beside the rock, where her back legs lost their footing. Bad luck. Not a very long fall but somehow a broken neck. Thankfully. Not just a broken leg…

She’s wedged under the fallen tree. There is no sign of struggle to suggest a long suffering, but still it affects us deeply to find her like this.
