The first of the last of Boxer’s calves

It’s calving season. I love this time of the year. Mothers and babies.

She looks just like her dad, my late bull, Boxer, whom I’ve written about in a previous post. She’s the first of his last drop, which will number no more than five; from the four cows and one heifer that made up the small herd at my brother’s place in the Lower Hunter Valley where Boxer spent his last season. We brought them all home at the start of July. I’ve been waiting for their calves to be born.

These photos were taken a few hours after her birth. Her mum is one of those lovely cows who takes her baby off and away from everyone else, hiding her in the grass, keeping to themselves for the first few days, mother and babe. I was so happy to find her. Dearest little grey thing.
