Rain! Last week we had 118.5 mm of rain. Beautiful rain, long overdue, life saving…

We had had 10 mm one night the week before that had been divine to hear on the roof at midnight. Another 9.5 mm the following day had a flock of cockatoos hanging upside down in the river oaks, flapping their wings in the rain, shreeking with joy. But a hot wind dried everything off completely the very next morning.

It has been very dry for the last five months. We were running out of feed, some of our dams were dry and the rest were disappearing, we had to keep moving the pump intake as the river kept shrinking, and we’ve had to buy three tanker loads of drinking water for the house, one after the other. It looked like drought to me…

So it wasn’t until last week that we finally got the Spring break that we need each year to survive Summer. Other places in the district got much more rain and I’d like some more rain too. But this made me very happy. I hate to think where we were heading without it…
