Mulbring Mare and foal

Way down the Hunter Valley, near Cessnock, is the village of Mulbring where I saw this mare and foal; of flesh and blood, not bronze. This lovely old mare and her sweet, pretty little foal…

I live surrounded by Australia’s race horse breeding industry in the Upper Hunter Valley but it brings me no joy to see all the thoroughbred foals born each year. The grim reality behind all the supposed glamour of horse racing is one of pure greed, delusion and cruelty. Race horses suffer mental and physical pain, and live lives of deep distress and misery, and for the vast majority that doesn’t make the grade or suffers injury, an early and stressful slaughter.

I don’t know what the future holds for this little filly but at least the odds aren’t completely stacked against her.
